신선들이 즐겨 먹었던 꾸지뽕, 이제는 음료로 드세요

예로부터 산청은 물 맑고 비옥한 토양을 자랑하는 곳으로 수많은 약재의 고장이라 알려져 있다. 그중에서도 신선들이 즐겨 먹었다던 꾸지뽕은 혈압과 혈당을 낮추어 주는 등 여러 가지 뛰어난 효과가 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 이에 꾸지뽕의 좋은 효능을 사람들이 먹기 편하게 음료로 개발한 이가 있어 화제가 되고 있다. 청정지역을 자랑하는 산청에 위치한 산청한방꾸지뽕 영농조합법인의 김광연 대표이사를 만나보았다. 

신선들이 즐겨먹던 꾸지뽕  
“꾸지뽕 열매는 신선이 먹던 과일입니다. 무병장수를 꿈꾸는 사람에게는 반드시 필요한 보약입니다.” 꾸지뽕은 예로부터 혈액을 맑게 하고 만성염증을 없애며, 혈압과 혈당 강하에 효과가 있는 약재로 널리 쓰였다. 이와 더불어 최근 한 방송사에서는 다큐멘터리를 통해 꾸지뽕을 느릅나무, 하고초(꿀풀), 와송과 더불어 4대 약초 중 하나라고 소개한 바 있다. 그만큼 꾸지뽕이 약재로써 가치가 높다는 얘기다. 김 대표이사는 청정지역 산청에서 자연의 법칙을 하나도 거스르지 않는 친환경 농법으로 건강한 꾸지뽕을 재배하고 있다. 현재 산청한방꾸지뽕 영농조합법인은 약 40,000m²(1만 2천 평)에 6년생 꾸지뽕과 약 8,300m²(2천 5백 평)에 3년생 헛개나무를 키우고 있다. “꾸지뽕 열매를 재배한 것은 2년 전부터지만 농장에 식재되어 있는 가시 없는 만생종 품종을 개발하기 시작한 것은 11년 전인 2002년부터입니다. 꾸지뽕이 사람에게 좋다는 이유만으로 무턱대고 나무를 심을 수는 없었죠. 이에 품종을  개발하기 시작해 지난 2012년에 5,200주의 묘목을 심고 본격적으로 꾸지뽕 재배를 시작했습니다.” 뿐만 아니라 그의 끈질긴 연구·개발을 통해 지난 2월, 국립종자원에 산음동의목(2017.2호)이란 품종으로 품종보호출원을 등록하기도 했다. 만생종 품종은 우리나라 대표 꾸지뽕 품종으로 일명 밀양종이라고도 하며 10년 이상 검증이 완료된 품종으로 접목묘임에도 불구하고 식재 후 4년까지는 가시가 있다가 4년 후에는 가시가 퇴화하는 유전적 특성을 가지고 있다. 또한 꾸지뽕 나무 품종 중 과일이 가장 많이 달리며 수세도 꾸지뽕 품종 중 가장 강하고 과일이 단단하여 잘 물러지지 않는 등 저장성이 뛰어나 어떠한 신품종보다 우수한 품종으로 각광받고 있다. 
     
피를 맑게 하고 만성염증 없애주며 혈압과 혈당을 줄이는 약재로 쓰이는 꾸지뽕
본디 성질이 따뜻하고 면역력 강화에 효과적인 것으로 알려져 있는 꾸지뽕은 예로부터 민간의 암과 당뇨, 고혈압 등 각종 성인병을 치료하는 데 사용되어 왔으며 최근에는 자궁암, 자궁근종과 같은 부인병, 여성 질환에도 효과가 높다고 알려져 세간의 관심을 모으고 있는 약재다. 또한 특유의 독성이나 부작용이 없기 때문에 남녀노소 모두 섭취 가능하고 특히 어린 아이들의 면역력 향상과 아토피 예방에도 탁월한 효과가 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 꾸지뽕을 구성하는 주요 성분에는 칼슘, 철, 칼륨, 비타민A, 비타민B1, 비타민B2, 비타민C, 식이섬유, 가바, 루틴 등이 있으며 이 중에서도 녹차나 뽕잎과 비교했을 때 꾸지뽕은 가바와 루틴 성분이 월등히 많이 함유되어 있다. 이와 더불어 허준의 동의보감에는 ‘몸이 허하여 귀먹은 것과 학질을 낫게 하며 성질이 따뜻하고 맛은 달며 독이 없다’고 기록되어 있으며 명나라 이시진의 ‘본초강목’, ‘민동본초’, ‘식물본초’ 등에도 꾸지뽕의 효능에 대한 다양한 내용이 기록되어 있다. 
특히 꾸지뽕은 4대 약초 중 하고초(꿀풀)와 와송보다도 항암 억제력이 높은 것으로 알려져 있으며 플라보노이드 성분이 많아 부작용 없는 항암효과뿐 아니라 스스로 병을 이겨내도록 저항력과 기력을 키워준다. 또, 아스파라긴산도 함유하고 있어 숙취에도 효능이 있고 간과 신장, 음혈, 피를 보호하여 혈액량을 늘리며 어혈과 갈증을 풀어주고 기억력과 정신을 맑고 안정적으로 유지하게 하여 노화를 방지하는 효과도 뛰어난 것으로 알려져 있다. 

몸에 좋은 꾸지뽕, 이제는 음료로 드세요
꾸지뽕의 효능이 알려지면서 사람들이 보다 편하게 꾸지뽕을 접하게 하기 위해 김 대표이사는 지난 2016년 12월, (재)경남 한방약초 연구소와 공동 개발해 무농약 과채음료인 ‘갈아만든 꾸지뽕’을 출시했다. “‘갈아만든 꾸지뽕’은 지리산 자락 청정골 산청 해발 300m의 맑고 깨끗한 자연환경에서 무농약으로 직접 재배한 꾸지뽕으로 만든 건강 음료이며 열 추출 방식으로 제조한 기존의 꾸지뽕 음료와 달리 직접 갈아 저온 착즙함으로써 영양소 파괴를 최소화했다는 점이 가장 큰 특징입니다. 뿐만 아니라 인공 향, 색소, 방부제를 전혀 사용하지 않았기 때문에 어린아이부터 노인까지 남녀노소 누구나 편하게 먹을 수 있는 음료입니다.” 현재 산청한방꾸지뽕영농조합법인은 경남도청을 통해 시카고 등 미국의 4개 지역과 수출을 논의하고 있으며 향후 꾸지뽕을 분말, 정, 차 등의 형태로도 출시할 계획이며 비누나 치약 등 생활용품에도 꾸지뽕 추출액을 이용한 다양한 제품을 만들어 사람들이 꾸지뽕을 보다 쉽게 접할 수 있게 할 예정이라고 한다.   

“자연환경에서 자라는 생명체가 비료나 물 없이도 자연에서 스스로 나서 자라는 것을 보고 자연에서 키운 꾸지뽕을 자신 있게 내놓을 수 있게 되었다”는 김광연 대표이사. ‘땅은 절대로 거짓말을 하지 않는다’는 것을 철칙으로 삼고 믿음과 정직으로 소비자에게 몸에 좋고 안전한 먹거리를 제공하고 싶다는 그의 바람처럼 4대 약초라고 불리는 꾸지뽕을 이용한 다양한 재품 개발을 통해 산청한방꾸지뽕영농조합법인이 산청의 대표적인 꾸지뽕 농장으로 거듭날 수 있기를 기대해본다.

Mulberry that Taoists enjoyed for food, now you can drink! 

A long time ago, Sancheong has been known for clean water and rich soil and it was the village of medicines. Among them, mulberry that they used to eat a lot for stabilizing their blood pressure and blood sugar and for many reasons has famous for. For that, there is someone who created it as beverage that everybody can drink with conveniences and he is catching all the attention. And he is CEO Kim, Gwang-Yeon of Sancheong oriental medicine mulberry farming Association Corporation. 

Mulberry loves Taoists eating
 “Mulberry was the fruit Taoists loved eating. It means this is a necessary restorative for who those want a life without disease.” Mulberry was actually widely used for medication materials for cleansing blood and removing chronic inflammation and being effective to going down the blood pressure and blood sugar. With this, recently, one TV broadcasting station once introduced mulberry is one of four elements of medical herbs including an elm, thesium, and wasong as a report. That much, mulberry deserves to be high-valued as the medical herb as a medicine. 
CEO Kim, Gwang-Yeon is growing healthy mulberry with an organic agricultural method that doesn’t break the natural law. Now Sancheong oriental medicine mulberry farming Association Corporation is growing 6 years old mulberry trees in about 40,000m² and 3 years old oriental raisin trees in about 8,300m². “It is 2 years ago to grow them but it is 11 years ago to develop a variety of late ripening without thorns, which was in 2002. We couldn’t plant mulberry without thinking just because they are good for human health. Thus, we started developing new species and planted 5,300 saplings in 2012 and genuinely began growing mulberry.” Besides, throughout his constant R&D activities, last February, he applied it for protection of new varieties of plants. 

Mulberry generally used as medicine to cleanse blood, remove a chronic inflammation and reduce a blood sugar 
Originally, mulberry is warm and effective to strengthen immunity so; it has been recognized for medicine to help cancer, diabetes, hypertension and other lifestyle diseases in folk remedies. But, recently, it is also good for female diseases such as uterine cancer and fibroid and many relevant people are interested in this result. Also, mulberry doesn’t have any specific toxic or side effects to be known; it can be possibly used to anybody from kids and adults. Especially, it is kind of working on children’s immunity system and prevention against atopic dermatitis as well. 
Major ingredients for mulberry are calcium, iron, potassium, vitamin A, B1, B2. C, fibers, GABA Lutine and among them, GABA and Lutine are way much rich compared to green tea or mulberry leaves. In addition, according to Huh, Jun’s [Donguibogam] (Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine), it cures deaf from a body feebleness and malaria. And the features are warm, sweet in taste and have no toxic in record and about its effectiveness is written in [Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compendium of Material Medical)], [Plants Medical Herbs] and [General Medical Herbs] and so on by Lee, Si-Jin from Ming Dynasty. 
In particular, mulberry is known for excellent anticancer treatment ability more than other famous herbs like thesium, and wasong and has plenty of flavonoid, so it helps people to have anticancer effectiveness and fight for themselves against diseases. Also, it has aspartic acid to be good for hangovers and protect liver, kidneys, hematophagia and blood to increase the amount of blood. This fixes extravasate blood and thirsty and brings the memory and mentality clear and stable, therefore, it prevents ageing remarkably. 

Mulberry for health, now you can drink it! 
Mulberry’s virtue has spread out to people more and more and CEO Kim created ‘Mulberry Juice’ which is a liquid type of package. He worked on this with Gyeongnam Medical Herb Research Institute Corporation in December 2016 because he wanted people to have with convenience. 
“Mulberry Juice is a healthy beverage out of mulberries that have grown in clean and natural farmlands, Sancheong village at 300m above the sea lying in Jiri Mountain. This is extracted by heat and different from any other commercial mulberry juice since we directly ground it and squeezed at the low temperature to make it not lose nutrition as much as we can. Not only that, there is no artificial additives, coloring, and flavors what so ever and everybody can drink it any time without worries.” 
Currently, Sancheong oriental medicine mulberry farming Association Corporation is discussing on exports to 4 cities in the states including Chicago via Gyeongnam local government on the way and he has a plan to manufacture it for powder, pills and even tea in the future. It will be used in producing soap, toothpaste to make it more into lifestyle in diversity. “I could proudly show mulberry frown in nature since I witnessed mulberry were grown well without fertilizes and water. It means mulberry is strong in it and has some power to survive over tough life.” This is what CEO Kim, Gwang-Yeon said. His philosophy is that ‘Land doesn’t lie at all’ and he said he would like to provide healthy and safe foods to the customers with trust and honesty. As his wish, we expect Sancheong oriental medicine mulberry farming Association Corporation would be a representative farm in Sancheong throughout mulberry R&D in merchandising.
