꼭두각시에 투영된 현대인의 자화상
흔히 사진을 일컬어 ‘빛으로 그리는 그림’이라 부른다. 오로지 빛이라는 재료 하나만을 가지고 세상의 모습을 작가의 시각에 따라 재현해내기 때문이다. 그리고 이 빛을 어떻게 다르게 이용하느냐에 따라 캔버스에 그림을 그리듯 새로운 이미지를 창조해낼 수도 있다. 김경수 작가의 작품들은 바로 이러한 빛의 색다른 변주를 보여준다. 어두운 공간 속에서 자신의 감각에만 의지해 조명의 종류와 빛의 방향, 조도량을 조절해가며 인화지 위에 빛을 칠해내는 것, 이른바 ‘라이트 페인팅(Light Painting) 기법’이라 불리는 이것이 바로 김경수 사진작가의 ‘붓’이다.
지난 4월, 인사동에 위치한 갤러리 이즈에서 김경수 작가의 개인전 <꼭두각시(Marionette)>가 열렸다. 2015년 열렸던 첫 번째 개인전 <별이 빛나는 밤>에 이어 김 작가의 자전적 이야기를 다룬 4부작 중 두 번째 순서로 마련된 이번 전시는 가느다란 실에 의해 조종당하는 마리오네트를 통해 사회라는 틀에 갇힌 채 자신의 의도와는 다르게 살아가는 현대인과 작가 자신의 모습을 담아낸 작품들로 구성돼 우리에게 묵직한 메시지를 던졌다. 첫 전시에서 별을 바라보며 그가 느꼈던 유년기의 동경과 사랑, 순수함을 물방울을 이용해 표현했다면, 이번 전시에서는 성인이 된 후 사회생활을 하며 겪어야 했던 고난과 갈등, 허무와 불안 등의 감정을 실에 매달린 마리오네트에 이입해 표현한 것이다.
김 작가는 “대부분의 사람들에게 있어 사회생활을 시작하는 20대 중반부터 40대 중반에 이르는 20여 년은 가장 처절한 삶의 모습이 드러나는 시기입니다. 이 시기를 거치며 많은 이들이 자신의 꿈을 잃고, 아픔과 시련을 겪게 됩니다. 그리고 제가 그랬던 것처럼, 자신이 세상의 주인공이 아니라 쳇바퀴 속의 꼭두각시에 불과했다는 사실을 깨닫게 되죠. 저는 사진을 통해 이런 슬픔과 절망, 눈에 보이지 않는 내면의 모습을 표현하고 싶었습니다”라고 설명했다. 그리고 현대인의 모습을 투영한 마리오네트에 감정을 불어넣고자 그가 사용한 기법이 바로 ‘라이트 페인팅’이다. 그는 붉은색과 푸른색, 초록색과 흰색의 조명을 섞어가며 무표정한 마리오네트에 열망과 환희, 우울과 절망 등의 다양한 감정들을 작품에 담아냈다. 사진과 회화의 경계에서 자기 내면의 솔직한 모습과 현대인의 자화상을 그려낸 그의 작품은 그래서 더욱 뜻 깊다.
카메라로 담아낸 인생의 다양한 색체
김경수 작가는 과학자에서 벤처사업가로, 그리고 이제는 사진작가로 변신하며 누구 못지않은 파란만장한 삶을 살아왔다. 1990년 카이스트에서 26세의 나이로 최연소 이학박사 학위를 딴 그는 한국화학연구원에서 촉망받는 연구원으로 일한 바 있으며, 이후 ㈜씨트리와 ㈜카이로제닉스, ㈜셀트리온화학연구소에서 연구소장과 대표이사를 역임하며 ‘21세기의 뛰어난 과학자 2000인’, ‘21세기의 가장 위대한 지성’, ‘21세기 가장 위대한 천재 500인’ 등 세계 인명사전에 20여 차례 등재되기도 했다. 그러나 그 과정에서 겪은 과도한 스트레스와 건강상의 문제, 숱한 좌절과 고난은 그가 49세라는 이른 나이에 은퇴를 결심하도록 만들었다. 김 작가는 “이미 몇 년 전부터 퇴직을 염두에 두고 좀 더 하고 싶었던 일들을 해야겠다는 생각을 하고 있었습니다. 2012년에는 투고한 시가 당선돼 시인으로 등단하기도 했지만, 시를 창작하는 고통이 너무나 힘겹더군요. 그러던 와중 어릴 적부터 관심 있던 미술을 보다 즐겁게 영위할 수 있는 방편으로 ‘사진’을 접하게 됐고, 2013년 봄부터 단국대 사진예술아카데미를 다니며 본격적으로 사진을 배우기 시작했습니다”라고 말했다.
언제나 새로움을 추구했던 과학자적 기질이 남아서일까. 그는 사진에 자신의 내면을 담아내기 위한 방법으로 생소한 ‘라이트 페인팅’ 기법을 선택했다. 그리고 독특한 방법을 통해 자신만의 작품세계를 구축해나가기 시작했다. 그 결과물이 두 차례에 걸친 개인전을 통해 선보인 작품들이다. 김 작가는 그 외에도 19회에 걸친 단체전과 초대전을 통해 작품 활동을 이어왔으며, 올 초 ‘제4회 대한민국국제포토페스티벌 우수작가상’을 수상하기도 했다. 현재 그는 4부작 시리즈의 나머지 이야기들을 준비하느라 여념이 없다. 3부 <아바타>에서는 현실에서 벗어난 상상의 세계로의 여행, 4부 <나는 나무로 살고 싶다>에서는 노년의 미래에 대한 삶의 고민과 성찰을 다룰 예정이다. 자신의 삶을 그대로 녹여낸 진정성 있는 작품들로 우리 사회에 위로와 공감, 희망의 메시지를 전하고 있는 김경수 작가. 그가 써내려가는 이야기가 앞으로도 오래도록 계속되기를 바란다.

The art of light draws an aspect of truthful life

Self-portrait of modern people reflected in Marionette
Photography is often cited as ‘a picture drawn by the light’. It realizes the taker’s view of the world through the light. How to use the light brings a new aspect of the same scene in the photo. The works of Kim Gyeong-su show these variations of the light. He adjusts the kinds of the lighting, the direction of the light and the amount of the light in a dark place and he works hugely depending on his own senses. He calls this procedure as ‘Light Painting Method’ and he regards the method as his brush.
Last April, Kim held his solo exhibition <Marionette> at the gallery IS in Insa-dong. He has planned a 4 series solo exhibition themed on his self-biography started with the first exhibition <Starry Night> held in 2015. Kim expressed his youthful yearning, love and purity with bubbles at the first exhibition and the second exhibition this year realized the busy modern people and Kim himself who lead a life different from what they intended within the frame of society through marionettes. He poured hardships, conflicts, emptiness and anxiety he felt since he became a grown up in marionettes hung on threads.
“Most people in their mid 20s to 40s have to go through probably the harshest life. Many of them give up their dream and suffer from pains and ordeals during this 20 year period. Like I did, they realize that they were not the hero of the world but a marionette in the frame of a sieve. So I wanted to express these feelings of sadness, despair and the invisible inner side through photography.”
Kim uses ‘Light Painting Method’ for his works. He mixes red, blue, green and white lightings to deliver passion, joy, depression and despair on the marionette’s poker face. It is meaningful that he draws self-portrait of modern people between the border of photography and painting.
Various colors of life delivered through camera
Kim used to be a scientist and a venture entrepreneur before being a photographer. He obtained a PhD in science as the youngest student of KAIST in 1990 at the age of 26. He worked as a promising researcher at the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology and served as the research director at C-TRI, Kairo Xenics and Celltrion. His name was listed 20 times in world biographical dictionaries including ‘2,000 Outstanding Scientists of the 21st Century’, ‘Greatest Intellectuals of the 21st Century’ and ‘500 Greatest Genius of the 21st Century’. However, the fame has its dark side: he suffered from excessive amount of stress, despair and hardship and it resulted in retirement at the age of 49.
“I thought I had to do something I really wanted to do. I made a debut as a poet in 2012 as one of my poems was picked up at a competition but creating poems was harsher than I thought. Then I came to think about photography and took a course at the Photography and Art Academy at Dankook University from 2013.”
Kim chose ‘Light Painting Method’ to give uniqueness to his works as displayed at his two solo exhibitions. Apart from solo exhibitions, Kim has participated in 19 group and invitational exhibitions and received an excellent prize at the 4th Korea International Photo Festival.
Currently, he is preparing for his 3nd series solo exhibition <Avatar> themed on imaginative world and the 4th <I Want to Live A Tree> themed on life in old age. Kim is known as a photographer who pours truthfulness, sympathy and hope in his works and you are highly advised to make a journey for his coming exhibitions.
