Yoon meets Korea-Pacific Islands Foreign Minister’s Meeting attendees

On the afternoon of October 27, President Yoon Seok-yeol met with a party of foreign ministers who visited Korea to attend the Korea-Pacific Islands Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The meeting was attended by the Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers of 12 countries, including Nauru, Niue, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea, Palau and Fiji, and the Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum. Yoon highly appreciated that Korea and Pacific Island countries have continuously developed friendly and cooperative relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations with Tonga in 1970, and emphasized that practical cooperation should continue in areas such as development cooperation, maritime and fisheries, and people-to-people exchanges. The party in attendance highly appreciated the development of substantive cooperation with Korea in climate change and development cooperation. They also said that they will do their best to successfully host the Korea-Pacific Islands Summit, which will be a milestone in new cooperation between Korea and the Pacific Islands. Yoon introduced the efforts to attract the 2030 Busan World Expo, and asked for support and interest as it would be a good opportunity to explore the future vision of the Pacific island nation, a maritime nation, if the World Expo is held in Busan.
