St. Louis, US in 1915, a girl named Peggy was playing. Not long after, she was killed by a car. The event aroused people’s interest in creating parks for children to play freely in safety and it also was the start of the Junior Chamber International (JCI) by Henry Giessenbier Jr. JCI has grown today to have 123 member countries, run 8,000 offices globally and as the largest NGO organization in the world. In South Korea, 20,000 members from 365 offices are engaged in the activities.

JCI runs development programs relating to individuals, business, region and international with grand goals of contributing to world peace and prosperity of humanity. It is a nonpolitical and non-profit organization and anyone aged between 20 and 42 can join JCI.

Geoje Junior Chamber International president Sungik Ban says “JCI is an international organization that makes contributions to promoting regional societies through vitality and activities of young people in the world. The organization goals to bring peace and prosperity to the world by doing best of their abilities according to each talent but under mutual goal and passion. To make difference from many nongovernmental organizations in the world, Geoje Junior Chamber International is focusing on regional development, win-win campaign and self-learning and development programs.”

Geoje Junior Chamber International special president Kiho Bae says “Special JCI is directly supporting regional JCI so I need to work in cooperation. The age limit for JCI membership was from 30 to 42 but it is now changed up to 45 as people’s lifespan is increasing. It is regretful though that the membership of Geoje Junior Chamber Internation is around 50 while it was around 100 before. This also is the reason that we raised the age limit to 45.”

Bae has been engaging in volunteer activities for many years and has served various leading roles of organizations in Geoje. He has led numerous donations to people in need through regional community centers and organizations.

“Helping others does not require something big but it starts at a small thing. As long as having a will to help others, everybody can do it. Humans are the species that cannot live alone but depending on each other and we feel happy by helping each other” says Bae.

Bae and Ban are determined to work in close cooperation this year also to make contributions to development of regional society and the world’s. <PowerKorea>
