[Plastic Threats Earth]

Appearing a hundred years ago, plastic has been used partly or wholly to almost all products made on Earth. From a simple spoon and cup to computer monitor frames and home appliances, it is hard for us to find products that do not partly contain plastic. Magical as it sounds, however, plastic has become a great threat to our health and living organisms on Earth today. A plastic product takes 500 to 1,000 years to decompose and world leaders are introducing tougher regulations on using the magical material. Companies are also moving fast to find or develop alternatives and some of them have harvested some notable fruits. According to a global market research firm Statista, the biodegradable plastic output will reach 9.7 million tons by 2030 from mere 1.23 million tons last year.

[Pro Pac]

Pro Pac is a South Korean biodegradable technology developer. Securing related technologies, the company is making 100% biodegradable bags and parts. Pro Pac boasts technologies that use PBAT (Polybutylene Adipate Terephtha late) and PBS (Polybuthylene Succinate) with natural materials to make biodegradable materials. LG and SK Chemical, in particular, are two big companies to make considerable investments in PBAT at the moment.

“PBAT is cheap compared to other biodegradable materials but has excellent tensile strength that can cover the drawbacks of PLA. For this reason, the market demand for PBAT has seen a sharp rise recently. We have our own technologies of using PBAT and PBS to produce cost-effective biodegradable products and we are supplying our innovative products to many companies including CJ, NongHyup, Kakao Store and Baemin” says Keongbo Nam, CEO of Pro Pac.

The products Pro Pac makes are as follows: biodegradable sanitary gloves, spoons, forks, knives, cups, straws, air caps, films, adhesives, buoys, felts and car parts. According to Nam, Pro Pac has contributed to reducing 10,502 tons of plastic and 91,905 CO₂ emissions since 2017. The company recently has signed a deal with a German automotive company to change existing number plates to biodegradable and with an American automotive company for rear view mirror. The biodegradable number plates especially endure strong winds and rainstorms but disappear quickly when buried in the soil. Taking the momentum, the company is working on expanding the product lines to airplane parts.

[Patents and Certificates]

Pro Pac has obtained ISO 9001, ISO 14001, EL724 and a number of patents relating to biodegradable resin processes and equipment. Europe’s Home Compost Certificate is also expected to see by the end of the year. To receive Home Compost Certificate, the product must be biodegraded in general conditions as well as in the soil and it must also prove to be used as a fertilizer. Nam is ambitious to grow Pro Pac as a global bio-plastic company like NatureWorks.<PowerKorea>
