(PowerKorea) South Korea is shifting fast to small family from big family. The aged populations are increasing as young people tend not to marry and having a baby. The government has brought the draft for new health insurance policy ahead of officially entering population aging in 2026. Senior clinics are increasing in numbers to tackle aging-associated diseases and social alienation. In Tongyeong, a port city on the southern coast of South Korea, The Jin Senior Town is proactively engaging in improving quality of life of the aged.
A healing sanatorium in a city
Haeesuk Cha, CEO of The Jin Senior Town, watched his grandma moved around in failing to find a room in sanatoriums when he was a child. He grew up his dream of running a sanatorium one day and fulfilled the dream with The Jin Senior Town nestled in Buksindong, Tongyeong, two years ago. The biggest advantage, Cha says, is the location as families can walk to visit without driving a car. The sanatorium keeps fresh air with the latest ventilating system and floors are all finished with underfloor heating to keep even temperature in winter and monsoon. Rehabilitation facilities are found on the 165 square meter first floor and living facilities on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors that can accommodate up to 92 patients. Our attention to detail care, emphasizes Cha, is second to none and all staff at The Jin Senior Town is proud of this.
Highly nutritional filial meal
The Jin Senior Town’s catering system provides highly nutritional diet through highly trained and experienced nutritionists and cooks. The basic five sides contain no artificial flavor enhancer. My wife used to work as a social worker, says Cha, and I helped her out during which I and my wife provided free meal box to elderlies. This virtuous deed led Cha to run Hyocook Gyeongnam branch from which 100 meal boxes are delivered to elderlies in the district every day. Cha is the one who introduced a cognition rehabilitation program ‘happy table’ for the first time in the district. Happy table helps seniors improve reaction, memory, attention and problem solving ability through games, analysis and management. More than 50 staff members at The Jin Senior Town are doing their best in serving patients with caring heart. However, Cha points out, the wages of social workers are limited and the government support is needed for us to provide even better services. Due to the pandemic, the visit of family is restricted and The Jin Senior Town sends texts with information on patient’s health status and improvement.
