President Moon paid a visit to the Gumi Industrial Complex on April 1 to listen to struggling industrialists in this time of the COVID-19. The complex in Gumi City led the nation’s textile and electronics industries for the last 50 years and marked 30 billion won ($24,523 million) export in 2005 as a single industrial complex in South Korea.

By touring Kolon Industries, the company that succeeded localizing fluorinated polyimide, Moon encouraged staff and was briefed about production of smart phones and double laptops. Fluorinated polyimide was formerly dominated by Japan.

In time of COVID-19 emergency, Kolon turned its medical filter facilities to MB filter facilities to make masks and gave out free masks and part of the facilities for negative pressure rooms.

At a meeting after the tour, Moon pointed economy, industry and public welfare as the three key areas to overcome and said that the government would gather its fullest strength for support and activation.

Moon pays respect to victims of Jeju Uprising

President Moon attended the 72nd anniversary of the Jeju Uprising and paid respect to victims and their families. He showed his strong will of finding the truth and urged lawmakers and politicians to push forward revision of the Special Act on Jeju Uprising.

The ceremony reduced number of attendees to 150 but consisted of representatives of victim’s family, heads of political parties and officials of related organizations. The ceremony was simple and a siren rang at 10am on all of Jeju Island in remembrance of those who lost their lives.

“May those who lost their lives rest in peace. They were the victims of state terror and ideology and I would like to pay my sincere respect to victims and their families as well as citizens of Jeju Island” said Moon.

He added that finding the truth of the Jeju Uprising was not about politics and ideologies but sharing the pains of fellow citizens and attitudes towards humanities.

Moon pointed out that the revision of the Special Act on Jeju Uprising was a matter of legal definition of the event and rightful compensation and indemnification which should be made while victim’s families were still alive. Moon also promised to launch a pilot running of the April 3 Trauma Center.

After the ceremony, Moon visited ‘Youngmowon’, a place to commemorate independence activists, patriots and victims of Jeju Uprising. Moon uploaded a sentence of the epitaph on his social media account that read “When we look back, everybody was victim and this epitaph is erected as a meaning that everybody is forgiven so the dead may rest in peace and the living may hold hands.”
