Moon meets Prayut Chan-o-cha
President Moon visited Thailand and had summit with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha who took the steering wheel of the country last July. At the summit, Moon said “Thailand was the second country which sent soldiers to South Korea after the US when the Korean War broke out. Koreans will never forget for the soldiers’ sacrifice for peace and freedom.” 

Prayut was the regimental commander of the 21st regiment sent to South Korea and Moon said “Koreans have special intimacy with you. I heard you enjoyed watching the Korean television series <Descendants of the Sun> and I’m one who served in the special force in the series.” 

Moon continued “Thailand is the most important partner of our New Southern Policy. If the Thailand 4.0 is linked with New Southern Policy, it will create synergy and co-growth. I hope we meet again at the ASEAN-ROK SUMMIT held in Busan this year.”

The two leaders signed 5 Memorandum of Understanding and one for the industry cooperation is expected to strengthen cooperation in robot, bio and future cars; the agreement to protect confidential military information is expected to enhance military exchange and defense industry cooperation: Thailand has been joining the South Korea’s Cobra Gold every year since 2010 and Korean companies made convoys for Thailand armies. 

Moon meets Deloire
President Moon met Christopher Deloire, who has been secretary-general and executive director of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) since 2012, at the Blue House on 18th September. RSF is a non-profit organization and releases the Freedom of the Press Index in 180 countries every year. Deloire sent official letters twice in June 2017 and June this year to the Blue House to meet the president which then was organized this September. 

Moon said “I would like give my gratitude to RSF who contributed greatly to protecting and promoting freedom of the press in the world including South Korea. Press is the very foundation to hold up democracy and I believe free yet fair reporting will make our societies better and sound.” 

Moon attends launching of 19th NUAC camp
President Moon attended 19th launching ceremony of the National Unification Advisory Council camp held at the Blue House on 30th September. The member of the advisors are 19,000, home 15,600 and overseas 3,600, women 6,397 and young people 4,777, and those who selected through participatory bidding 1,900 (10%). Sehyeon Jeong, the chief vice president of the council said that the council brought up 4 activation directions to realize new era of the Korean Peninsula. 

Moon said in his opening remark “The power of the council is at embracing different ideologies, regions, generations and social classes and the council has played its role to gather strength of 613 civil and regional organizations home and abroad as well as 19 universities to create a bond of sympathy and social sentiment for peaceful unification.”

Moon asked the members to gather strength to push forward 2032 Seoul-Pyongyang Olympics and said “We and the international society should show actions if the North shows actions of denuclearization. Turning the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) into international peace zone can be a good example of these actions to build trust. The timely wisdom, decision and action are very important and I ask you to bring up ideas and methods for necessary policies.” 

A DMZ peaceful road commentator Jeonghye Park said “Goseong County opened the DMZ peaceful road on 27th April this year. It was 66 years after the armistice of the Korean War. For the last 4 months, more than 10,000 people walked the road and I think this is a good example of peace economy.”

A university student member Sojeong Hwang said “I think young people like me seem to open their heart to peaceful unification through a series of summits held between the South, the North and the US since the PyeongChang 2018. So we, the young members of the council will have to share stories for new Korean Peninsula and bring good ideas and suggestions.”
