Hwang Da-woon, CEO of Ox Box Korea, worked as a chartered accountant for 15 years in the UK. Also as a mother of two children, she had a great interest in educating her children to find solutions and answers by self-motivated and self-directed learning; thus launched Ox Box Korea 6 month ago. And the answer for self-directed learning was making the most of ‘playing’ instead of rote-learning widely spread in Korea.

Ox Box English Playtime, for example, is made of 12 modules of playing with English at home and at institutions. Story-Activity-Memory, for another example, is designed to elevate decorum, basic tech training and English learning developed by English teachers in the UK who gathered years of their knowledge and experience.

Rote learning is the deep-rooted education method in Korea and it has made many challengers with new ideas and methods fall into despair no matter how hard they tried. Hwang, nevertheless, rolled up her sleeve to meet parents, instead of education officials, once a week to find things to improve together so that learning English is not just about reading, writing and speaking but also a tool to understand the world better and wiser.

“Sincerity and transparency are very important for this. We must be honest to bring up the problem to find effective solutions or improvements. And this not only applies to education but also to running the business” emphasizes Hwang.

Accordingly, Ox Box Korea lays its value at the two core philosophies: ‘communication with the world in English’ and ‘be friend with English in playing’. For those who are tired of rote learning or have not seen much improvement in English, Ox Box Korea will be worth having a go.
