Increasing number of single households is contribution to increasing number of pet populations. Around 10 million Koreans are known to have a pet. Seeing the ever growing market, companies big or small are rushing into the market with various business ideas and services. Meanwhile, the Korea Pet Industry Retail Association was established to protect the natural rights of small business owners in the field.

Hearing and delivering the voices of small pet business owners
It seems always the same story that small business owners initiate a new field and grow the market but big companies join and eat out them one by one. Likewise, the Korean pet market has a huge debt to small pet business owners but their share is shrinking by the stepping into of large companies. Small pet business owners, therefore, gathered together to establish the Korea Pet Industry Retail Association in April last year on obtaining an authorization from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

Lee Ki-jae took the steering wheel. He said “Our foremost goal is to protect commercial supremacy of small pet business owners from the large on/off line distribution companies. We are not just against large companies but their entering the market will certainly kick out small pet businesses one by one. So, we must gather our voices and deliver them to the organizations related.”

<Legislation of Surviving Business Category> for small business owners
The Korea Commission for Corporate Partnership is working on promoting small business owners and SMEs powered by the related law and suggestions of appropriate types of business. A survey was carried out on pet food, goods and distribution in October last year by the Partnership and they are now hearing the voices of both small pet business owners and large companies.

Cha said “It is shocking that around 700 small pet business owners were out of business last year alone thanks to the large e-commerce companies. 80% of pet retailers are small and competing with large companies is like hitting a rock with an egg.”

After continuous complaints, the Association, in cooperation with the Small Enterprise and Market Service, has passed an agenda <Legislation of Surviving Business Category> at the National Assembly and is waiting to hear the result at the moment.

Gathering strength for better
The Korea Pet Industry Retail Association currently has around 300 member companies and is working in cooperation with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and competent authorities. In order to share information on the pet markets home and abroad, the Association is also running training programs, seminars and consulting. Char said “The Association is expecting around 1,000 members within the year. But our goal is to invite around 8,000 members nationwide including veterinary clinics.”

Lee has run a pet retail shop for the last 30 years and is the one who knows about the industry more than anyone else. He said that he and the members of the Association would work in one mind to bring stability and steady flow of income to small pet business owners.
