The KAIST Computation Design Center opened its door with a goal to develop scenarios and integrated contents specialized for optimized computation design frame works. For this, the center is working hard to secure original technologies and to build the foundations for industry-university cooperation. An optimized design is a must needed technique to bring the best results possible to performance, materials, process and cost. The center uses open sources and localizes software to make easy of developing necessary techniques for the industries and academic world. “The optimized design is a core technology for Korea to grow the industries in this rapidly changing global market especially in the smart manufacturing and engineering sectors” explains Director Han. Currently, the center is carrying out three tasks: 1) development of product design on open source CAD 2) development of computation engineering design programs for multi-purpose optimization 3) development of interfaces customized for human-communicative interactive. Also, the center held the 7th Edison Challenge to promote its ongoing development ‘EdisonDesigner, m.Sketch (a CAD system) and the researches on optimizations by using the evolutionary algorithm; 71 people of 24 teams from 8 universities participated in the challenge; the center published the results of the challenge on the journal of the Society for Computational Design and Engineering. “For the last 4 years, the center has developed 97 kinds of 66 computation design SW as well as 32 kinds of interface scenarios which made us possible to increase the level of understanding about computation design and of fostering industry specialists. Korea’s technologies in machinery, aviation, ocean engineering and industrial design are still behind of those in the advanced countries but we have excellent manpower and can follow up the level if we work harder.”
