해양생물자원의 고부가가치 상품개발로 해양시대 선도

해양생물자원은 세계 동물성 단백질 공급량의 약 6분의 1을 차지할 정도로 세계 식량자원으로서 매우 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있다. 우리나라의 경우 동물성 단백질 공급량 중 해양생물 자원이 차지하는 비율은 약 60%로 생물자원에 대한 의존도가 매우 높은 편이다. 해양생물은 종류도 풍부하여 건강식품뿐만 아니라 의약품 등의 원료로도 사용되고 있는 만큼 그 쓰임새도 다양해 현재 고갈되어가고 있는 육상생물 대체자원으로 해양생물자원에 대한 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 

우리 건강에 있어 해양생물 중요성을 널리 알리다
해양생물자원 연구에 있어선 선구자적인 김세권 한국해양대학교 석좌교수가 (주)한국콜마의 지원으로 세계저명출판사인 미국 CRC 출판사에서 ‘Healthcare Using Marine Organisms(해양생물을 이용한 헬스케어)’를 출간하여 이목이 집중됐다. 이 책은 필자가 40여년간 바다에 서식하고 있는 해양생물자원으로부터 고부가가치의 새로운 생리기능성 소재 개발에 관한 연구, 특히 항비만, 항암, 항고혈압, 항노화, 항당뇨, 항알레르기, 항에이즈, 골다공증, 천식, 수면개선제, 성기능개선제, 육모제 등 효과가 있는 해양천연물성분 및 기능성 화장품 소제에 대한 흥미있는 연구결과를 비전공인들도 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 정리하여 실질적으로 건강유지에 도움이 되는 유익한 정보를 제공한다.
김세권 석좌교수는 미국 출판사에 책을 펴 낸 이유에 대해서 “최근 TV나 언론매체에 건강식품 광고들이 홍수처럼 쏟아져 나와 전문지식이 없는 사람들을 현혹하고 있음에 안타까움을 느낀 저자는 이 책에서 여러 가지 생활습관병 (성인병) 질환의 기초지식을 소개하고 해양생물의 생리기능성분들이 어떻게 이들 질환에 효능이 있는지 실험데이터를 활용하여 구체적으로 설명했다. 특히 서구인들은 해양생물이 인간에게 얼마나 가치있는지를 모르기 때문에 이들에게 해양생물이 우리 건강에 얼마나 중요한지를 알리려고 영문 서적을 출간하게 되었다”고 말했다. 
한국해양대에 해양바이오소재 산업화 센터를 설치, 운영하고 있는 김세권 석좌교수는 지난 1982년 부경대 응용화학과에 부임하여 해양생화학연구실을 만들었고, 2006년부터 화학과 교수, 미국 일리노이 및 캐나다 메모리얼 대학교 객원교수를 지냈다. 그리고 2004년부터 10년간 해양수산부 지정 해양바이오프로세스연구단 단장을 역임, 2014년 퇴임 후 과학기술융합전문대학원 해양바이오융합과학과 연구특임교수로서 대학원생 지도 및 연구를 수행하며 석사과정 71명, 박사과정 33명을 배출해 냈다. 이중 24명이 국내외 대학교수로 활동하고 있다. 또한 한국키토산학회와 한국해양바이오학회를 창립하여 초대회장을 역임하기도 했다. 
지난해 지방대 교수로는 유일하게 ‘제60회 대한민국학술원상’을 수상한 김세권 석좌교수는 지난 2014년에는 미래창조과학부가 한국 최고 과학자 10명에게 주는 지식창조대상을 부산·경남·울산지역 대학교수 중 유일하게 받기도 했다. 

해양생물자원의 고부가가치 상품화에 주력
“4차 산업혁명으로 인해 인공지능이 갖춰진 수중로봇, 무인 잠수정, 무인원료 채취선 등이 개발되면 앞으로 가장 발전하여 국가동력산업으로 성장할 수 있는 분야가 해양바이오산업입니다”라고 말하는 김세권 석좌교수는 국내외적으로 해양생물자원에 대한 고부가가치를 알리기 위해 노력하고 있다. 지금도 한국생물공학회의 지원으로 『바다를 알면 미래가 보인다, 돈이 되는 해양생물자원』을 집필하고 있다.
지난해 세계적 학술정보서비스 전문기관인 톰슨 로이터에서 선정한 ‘세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 과학자’로 선정되기도 한 김세권 석좌교수는 40여 년간 해양바이오 및 기능성 식품 분야에서 국내외 유명 학술지에 650여 편(SCI 480여 편)의 논문을 발표했으며, 130여 건의 관련 특허 및 등록, 70여 권(국외:32편)의 전문서적 출간 등 엄청난 부가가치 창출에 기여했다. 지금까지 미‧이용 해양생물자원을 이용한 난치성 질환 예방과 치료를 위한 새로운 식‧의약 소재 개발 및 생산 공정 기술의 최적화, 해조류 및 미세조류를 이용한 면역 조절제 발굴 및 제품화 기술, 기능성 식품 및 화장품 소재개발 등 다양한 연구를 수행해왔다. 
그의 업적 가운데서도 「해양생물자원을 이용한 식·의약 소재물질 개발」 연구는 ‘2010 국가연구개발 우수성과 100선’에 선정되기도 했다. 해조류로부터 개발한 피부미백, 주름개선, 아토피 효과 물질에 대한 이 3건의 연구는 (주)한국콜마에 기술이전 되기도 했다. 특히 세계 최초로 키토산 가수분해 효소를 이용, 키토산 올리고당을 연속적으로 생산할 수 있는 기술을 개발했으며 이를 기업에 기술이전 해 1000억 원대의 부가가치를 창출했다. 
그 계기로 현재 (주)한국콜마 지원으로 해양생물자원으로부터 식‧의약 소재, 기능성 화장품 소재 및 천연물 신약에 관한 연구를 수행하고 있는 김세권 석좌교수는 해양생물자원의 고부가가치 상품화에 집중하고 있다. 
화장품 OEM 기업으로 시작한 (주)한국콜마는 현재 제약과 건강기능식품 분야로의 영역을 넓혀가고 있는 기업으로 화장품과 의약품의 탁월한 원천 기술을 가진 종자기업이다. 이런 기업의 사업영역과 김세권 석학교수의 연구지식은 서로 시너지 효과를 높이며 국내 해양생물자원을 활용한 상품을 개발, 고부가가치 산업으로 발전시켜나가고 있다. 
그의 지칠 줄 모르는 연구 활동으로 앞으로 우리나라 해양생물자원을 활용한 제품군은 더욱 다양해 질 거라 생각되며 고부가가치 산업으로의 발전을 기대해 본다. 

“Marine bio materials are a high value added future industry to pioneer and invest”

Kim Se-gwon is received as a pioneer and authority of the marine bio materials. His book <Healthcare Using Marine Organisms> attracted a great attention as soon as it was published by CRC Press, a renowned publisher in the USA, with the support of Kolmar Korea in March 2018. Kim gathered 40 years of his researches and findings for the book and introduced interesting research results about the marine materials that can be used for medicine or functional cosmetics in relation to the cures for obesity, cancer, high blood pressure, aging, diabetes, allergy, AIDS, osteoporosis, asthma, insomnia, impotence and hair loss. “I was alarmed at the healthy functional food commercials covering the media to allure normal consumers who don’t have professional knowledge about the ingredients used in the food. So I wrote the book in easy texture for everybody to understand and introduced the basic information on the co-relations and effects between adult diseases and marine materials. Many western people are rather ignorant about the values of marine organisms and this also made me write the book in English” explained Kim. A short history of Kim’s career: Kim was offered a place at applied chemistry of Pukyong National University in 1982 and opened the Marin Biochemistry Research Lab. He served as the director of the Marine Bioprocess Research Corp designated by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries from 2004 until 2014, and also served as a guest professor at University of Illinois (US) and Memorial University of Newfoundland (Canada) from 2006. It is praiseworthy that years of his passionate researches and teachings has fostered 71 talented students with a master’s degree and 33 with doctor’s degree of which 24 are active as a professor home and abroad at the moment. He received the 60th National Academy of Sciences Awards and in 2014 was chosen as one of the 10 Knowledge Creation Award winners by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning. “The marine bio industry has a great potential to grow in connection with underwater robots, manless submarine and manless mining boats. So, Korea had better promote the industry as a future growth engine by taking the best seat in advance.” Kim has published 650 papers including (SCI 480) home and abroad for the last 40 years and applied or obtained 130 patents and written 70 books of which 32 were published overseas. One of his researches <Development of Medicine and Food on Marine Organisms> especially was chosen for the 100 of National Researches and Developments in 2010 and the skin whitening, wrinkle improvement and atopy parts of the research results were transferred to Kolmar Korea. Kim also developed the technology that can serially produce chitosan oligosaccharide by using the chitosan hydratase for the first time in the world which made a great contribution to creating KRW 100 billion won added value. In recognition of his contribution, the global mass media company Thomson Reuters chose Kim to be included in The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds. Currently, Kolmar Korea is providing an unsparing support to Kim and the collaboration between the authority of marine bio materials and the leading pharmaceutical and health functional food company are highly expected to create great synergy effects in the future Korean economy.
