Art Story’

“Art Story is new concept psychotherapy”
Im Ji-hyang, Art Therapy Professor at Daegu Cyber University

It is not new today to read news reports that many of us suffer from stress, anxiety and depression. While many advanced countries are running effective therapy programs to tackle the issues, the Koreans’ awareness about the issues does not seem to be that much serious. Im Ji-hyang, Art Therapy Professor at Daegu Cyber University, has exerted utmost effort in building professional knowledge and experience in the field for many years. She is a doctor of special education and has strived for development of effective psychotherapy programs for the last 20 years. She particularly focused on the possibility of ‘art therapy’ as an effective tool to cure one’s mental and psychological state. Her brainchild ‘Art Therapy’ started from this possibility and it is designed to help the patient gain an insight into oneself and start dialogue with inner self. “I think many people misunderstand about ‘art therapy’. This is because the word ‘therapy’ can create a sense of repulsion as they think they are not a person with mental issues. But therapy, in fact, can be a means to cure one’s internal scar, develop dormant ability and promote creativity. Art therapy, for example, can help them stablize their psychological instability and open their heart to others” explains Im. Art Story is designed, in this respect, to improve the public awareness about art therapy and to adopt it promptly to the field. ‘Art Story’ is a participant-driven therapy program where the existing counseling psychology is combined with ‘prevention’. It uses various materials such as art, music, the game of go, coffee, picture books, horticulture and food to promote self-awareness and how he/she is interacting with family, school, fellow workers and local communities. It is especially effective for children and young people who have difficulty in expressing their emotions to others and who need to start building their identity. “It is regretful that we have ignored many children and young people due to the prejudice of the term ‘psychotherapy’. Art Story in a way is developed as a preventive self-growing program that can help children and young people grow physically and mentally sound.” Im is the one who first opened online art therapy department at Daegu Cyber University in 2005 and obtained authorization from the Ministry of Education. It was followed by opening the same course at master’s degree in 2012 which also was authorized by the Ministry of Education. Meanwhile, Im has been actively engaging in various social contribution activities for many years.  She has run free lectures and programs on humanism at various organizations such as youth detention centers and prisons for 20 years. In recognition, she received citations from Gwangju Youth Detention Center and Daegu Prison. She also organized free psychotherapy and art therapy for family members of those who fought or died in protection of the country and received a citation from the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. Every year since 2006, Im has flown to Thailand, the Philippines, China, Albania and Hungary to give free art therapy sessions and to promote self-leadership programs for both locals and Korean expats. The self-leadership programs are also widely practiced at various educational and government organizations in Daegu. From 2016, Im started to run Art Story Self-Leadership Academy for students in Daegu according to each category themed as ‘learning’ for elementary school, ‘communication’ for middle school and ‘sharing’ for high school. When the earthquake hit Gyeongju in September 2016, Im organized a volunteer group to provide psychotherapy sessions and workshop in an effort to prevent PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). In recognition, Im received an appreciation plaque from the mayor. Im says “More and more people will see the need for psychotherapy and the government will also bring up appropriate programs and measures for support. For now, I will do my best to raise public awareness about psychotherapy and work hard to introduce more effective therapy methods and academic courses.”
