문재인 대통령, 뉴욕 동포 간담회로 순방 첫 날 일정 마무리
문재인 대통령은 뉴욕 지역 동포 300여 명과 만찬 간담회로 순방 첫날 일정을 마무리했다. 뉴욕, 뉴저지, 펜실베이니아 등 미동북부 한인 인구는 약 45만 명으로 추산되며 약 36만 명이 뉴욕, 뉴저지 지역에 거주하고 있다.
동포 1세들이 이룬 경제적 기반을 바탕으로 1.5세, 2세들이 미 주류사회인 금융, 법조, 의료계 등 전문직으로 급격히 진출하고 있고, 최근 선출직 공직 진출에 대한 관심도 높아지고 있다. 이 날 간담회에는 45만 명의 미동북부 동포를 대표하여 경제·금융·IT·문화·예술 각 분야에서 두드러진 활동을 펼치고 있는 동포들을 초청해 그간의 이야기를 나누고 격려했다.
특히 이번 동포간담회에는 한국계 미국 육사생도 10명도 참석했다. 미 육사생도 전체 4,400명 중 한국계 미국인이 200여명 정도로, 외국계 미국인으로는 최대 규모다. 미 육사생도는 미군의 미래에 중요한 역할을 수행하게 될 인재들로, 96년생 안양에서 태어나 2세 때 가족과 함께 이민 온 장병우 생도가 문재인 대통령에게 리더쉽에 대한 조언을 부탁했다. 문재인 대통령은 본인의 특전사 경험을 얘기하며 “안 되면 되게 하라”는 군인자세를 말했다. 안보는 군인에게 맡기고 국민들은 일상에서 자유롭고 민주적으로 살 수 있다며, 미국의 안보뿐 아니라 한국의 안보도 생각해주고, 한미 동맹관계에서 든든한 접착제가 되기 바란다고 답했다.
한편 이번 동포간담회에 참석한 교민 중 열 분은 특별히 ‘2018 평창 동계올림픽 및 동계패럴림픽대회 뉴욕 홍보위원’으로 위촉되었으며, 간담회의 대미는 성악가 조수미 씨의 축하공연으로 마무리되었다.

문재인 대통령, ‘제64주년 해양경찰의 날’ 기념식 참석해
지난달 13일 '제64주년 해양경찰의 날'을 맞아 문재인 대통령은 기념식이 열리는 인천 중구 북성동에 위치한 해양경찰서 전용부두를 찾았다. 문재인 대통령은 먼저 국화 한 송이를 들고 이청호 경상 흉상 앞에 헌화 후 묵념하며 우리 바다를 지키다 순직하신 故 오진석 경감, 박경조 경위, 이청호 경사를 비롯한 해양경찰관들의 명복을 빌었다. 문재인 대통령은 자리에 함께한 故 오진석 경감의 부인과 자녀들을 위로했다.
특히 이번 기념식에는 세월호 유가족이 함께 해 더욱 큰 의미가 있었다. 3년 전 세월호 참사 때 보여준 실망스러운 모습 때문에 조직 해체라는 아픔을 겪은 해경이 국민의 해경으로 거듭나도록 응원하기 위해 특별히 어려운 걸음을 하게 된 것이다. 문재인 대통령은 부활한 대한민국 해양경찰에 두 가지 국민의 명령을 전했다. " 첫째, 조직의 명운을 걸고 국민의 신뢰를 회복해야 합니다.", " 둘째, 더 이상 무능과 무책임 때문에 바다에서 눈물 흘리는 국민이 없어야 합니다."라는 것이다. 또한 기념식을 마칠 무렵 '1002함정'이 해상에서 세월호 미수습자 다섯 분을 끝까지 구조하겠다는 뜻을 담아 다섯 차례 기적을 울리는 것으로 이번 행사가 마무리되었다.

President Moon closed his first day of the visit to the United States by inviting 300 Koreans living in New York to a dinner. Approximately 360,000 Koreans are estimated to live in New York and the vicinity. The second generations of the migrated Koreans are now showing strong presence in fields of finance, law and medicine and the invited 300 included the figures in IT and culture and art. 10 Korean-American U.S Military Academy cadets were also included in the guests and it is notable that the Korean-American cadets take the largest part (about 200) of the total 4,400 cadets. Moon advised a Korean-American cadet Jang Byeong-woo by making the most of his years in the Special Forces “Do it until it is done” and added “Soldiers protect their country so that the people carry on their life in freedom and democracy. I ask you to do your best in protecting the United States and to play a great role for stronger Korea-U.S. Alliance.” Moon appointed 10 guests as honorary ambassador of The Pyeongchang 2018 on the day and soprano Jo Su-mi gave a congratulatory performance to close the dinner in the evening.

President Moon attended the celebration of The 64th Korea Coast Guard Day held at the harbor in Jung District, Incheon. Prior to the ceremony, Moon paid his respect to Lee Chung-ho, Oh Jin-suk and Park Gyeong-jo who died on duty and laid a chrysanthemum. Moon then encouraged the wife and the children of Oh. The celebration this time was meaningful as the families of the Sewol ferry disaster victims also attended to support the reborn of the Korea Coast Guard disbanded soon after the disaster. Moon delivered to the Korea Coast Guard the two callings of the people: recovering the public trust and making sure the same disaster never will happen again. The celebration was closed by the five times of horns from the Warship 1002 to show its determination to recover the remains of unfound five victims of the Sewol ferry disaster.
