‘일기장’ 같은 그림 통해 새로운 감각 일깨워

내 그림 작업은 치열하기보다는 자유롭다. 그것은 똑같이 그려내지 않아도 되는 자유로운 상상 때문이다. 어디에선가 보았던 풍경, 강렬한 느낌, 자연의 아름다움과 이미지가 결합되어 형태와 색채로 다가왔다. 커피 한 잔에 음악이 흐르고, 긁어내고 지우고 다시 그리기를 반복하여 마침내 사인으로 마무리될 때까지의 여정을 즐긴다. (작가노트 중에서)

새로운 감각 일깨우는 김혜옥 작가의 그림들
김혜옥 작가의 작품에서는 일반적인 서양화에서 볼 수 있는 느낌과는 색다른 매력이 드러난다. 하나의 시점과 하나의 소재에서 벗어나 다양한 소재들이 다양한 구도를 통해 구성되어 있으며 그렇기 때문에 관객으로 하여금 한 가지의 주제에서 벗어나 다양한 생각이 들게 한다. 그녀의 이러한 작품에 대해 미술평론가 김선태는 ‘조형적 측면에서 오스트리아 분리파의 양식과 연결시켜 볼 수 있으며, 평면구조와 장식적 꾸밈과 심미적 요소 그리고 구성적 요소가 감지되는 것은 아르누보(Art Nouveau)적인 경향과도 밀접하게 연관 지어 볼 수 있다’라고 언급한 바 있다. 이렇듯 독창적인 작품 세계를 창조해온 김혜옥 작가는 자신의 작품을 통해 또 다른 비상을 꿈꾸고 있다.
강원도에서 태어난 김 작가는 어린 시절부터 그림을 좋아했고 대학교에서는 디자인을 전공하기까지 했지만 결혼 후 작품 활동을 하기 위한 상황이 여의치 않았던 탓에 그림을 잊고 지냈다. 그러나 한 번 꾸기 시작한 꿈은 쉽게 지워지지 않는 법. 다시 한 번 그림을 본격적으로 그려보자는 마음을 먹은 김 작가는 그 때 상대적으로 늦은 나이였음에도 불구하고 예원예술대학교에 입학해 회화를 다시 공부하기 시작했다. 수많은 교수님들과 또 자신의 스승님을 거치면서 다양한 화풍에 대해 익히고 그것을 연습하기를 수년이 지나 마침내 꽃피워낸 김 작가의 작품 세계는 유럽식 화풍에 그 뿌리를 두고 있기는 하지만 어디에서도 볼 수 없었던 새로운 감각을 일깨우는 매력이 있다.

다양한 오브제로 장식적인 화풍 완성
김혜옥 작가의 작품은 단선적이기보다는 입체적이고, 단순한 것들의 모임으로서 만들어지기보다는 다분히 장식적인 화풍을 갖고 있다. 주요한 주제로 그려왔던 꽃들이 있는 풍경을 보더라도 꽃과 줄기, 그리고 배경이 화폭 안에서 드러나는데 대부분의 경우 한 가지 색깔로만 채워져 있지 않고 두세 가지의 색채가 뒤엉켜 독특한 공간감을 자아낸다. 그 뿐 아니라 하나의 작품을 완성하는 데 있어서 도자기나 돌가루, 유리가루 등 다양한 오브제를 사용하여 작품에 입체감을 부여한다.
작가는 스스로 “내 작품의 기본은 흙과 자연”이라고 말한다. 이는 자연을 사랑하는 그녀의 성정을 고스란히 담은 것이라고 할 수 있는데 흙을 바탕으로 탄생한 모든 자연의 기운을 화폭 안에 담아보자는 목적으로 시작된 것이 작업의 핵심이다. 
특히 산과 바다, 숲을 거닐면서 보고 겪은 느낌들이 그녀의 그림 안에서 중심 소재가 되고, 마음속에 떠오른 것들을 화폭에 가만히 펼쳐내다 보면 자연히 다양한 색이 나온다고 한다.  김 작가는 “하늘의 구름을 매우 좋아한다. 붉은 구름을 이번 아트페어 작품 속의 한 장면으로 선보인 것을 시작으로 언젠가는 그름이 주제가 되는 작품을 할 것이다”라고 이야기했다.  오로지 자신의 이야기를 하기 위해 수많은 이야기를 거쳐 온 것처럼 또 하나의 자신의 모습을 세상에 선보이기 위해 지금도 그녀는 다양한 방식의 작품들을 만들어오고 있다.

‘3개월의 일기장’ 같은 그림 추구해

인터뷰를 위해 방문한 작가의 작업실에서는 100호 규모의 그림이 매우 돋보였다. 그 규모가 매우 큰 만큼 작품 안에서는 하나의 소재만 들어있는 것이 아니고, 다양한 소재들이 각자의 배치에 따라 자리를 잡고 각자의 이야기를 하고 있었다. 그녀의 그림 안에는 색 하나, 오브제 하나 허투루 배치된 것이 없다.  그래서인지 그 작품은 마치 작품을 완성하는 데까지 걸린 시간을 고스란히 함축하고 있는 ‘3개월의 일기장’과 같아 보였다. 그녀의 작품은 이처럼 다양한 이야기를 품은 채로 관객들 앞에 꽃피우는 경우가 많다. 그래서인지 김 작가는 “그림을 깊게 파헤치려 하지 말고 보이는 대로 즐겨줬으면 좋겠다”라는 소망을 전하기도 했다. 하나의 그림을 보고 나서는 각자가 느끼는 것이 다르고 또 각각의 구성 요소에 대한 중요도를 판단하는 것 역시 각자의 삶의 여정이 드러날 수밖에 없는 것이다. 그래서 그녀는 지금까지 다양한 방식으로 이해되어도 괜찮은 자신만의 이야기를 완성시키기 위해 마치 일기를 쓰는 것처럼 올곧이 작품 활동에만 매진하고 있는 지도 모른다.
김 작가는 또한 현재 고양미협 회원으로서 지역 내 예술가들의 활발한 작품 활동을 모색하기 위해 노력하고 있기도 하다. 문화적인 기반이 비교적 탄탄한 고양시의 경우에도 작가들이 작품 활동을 하면서 생계를 유지하기가 쉽지 않은 현실 때문이다. 그녀는 “고양미협에 등록된 회원만 해도 600명이 넘는데 실제로 활동하는 것은 그의 1/3 정도밖에 되지 않는다. 생계유지를 위해 일을 해야 하거나, 또는 그마저도 여의치 않아 활동을 하지 못하는 경우까지 있기 때문이다. 작가들의 원활한 활동을 위해서는 작가를 위한 화실이나 레지던시(Residency) 등 다양한 부문에서 지원이 이루어져야 할 것이다”라는 부분을 강조하기도 했다.

9월 열린 고양국제아트페어 참여해
“향후 유럽에서 전시 계획하고 있어”
한편 김 작가는 지난 9월 15일부터 21일까지 열린 고양국제아트페어에 참여하여 자신만의 독창적인 세계를 다시 한 번 관람객들에게 널리 알렸다. 어디에서도 쉽게 그 유래를 찾아보기 힘들기에, 스스로 ‘일기장’이라고 부르는 그녀의 작품은 이번 아트페어를 통해 다시 한 번 크게 주목받으며 작가로서의 명성을 알리는 계기가 되었다. 김 작가는 “계속 큰 규모의 작업을 하다 보니 스스로가 지치는 것도 있었고, 관객들이 쉽게 접근하기 어려워하는 것을 보기도 했다. 그래서 최근에는 인테리어 소품 등의 작은 작품을 만들어 조금 더 친근하게 다가가는 것을 목적으로 하고 있으며 이에 대한 호응도도 좋은 편이다. 특히 도자기를 접목한 작품들을 매우 좋아해 주시는데 작품으로서 뛰어날 뿐 아니라 인테리어로서도 상당한 효과가 있다는 소감을 전해주시기도 했다”라고 이야기했다.
김 작가는 현재까지 8회의 개인전을 개최했으며, 각종 단체전을 통해 중국 헤이룽성, 산둥성, 미국 LA, 뉴욕 초대전 등 다양한 해외 국가에서까지 그녀의 이름을 널리 알렸다. 특히 큐비즘적인 매력이 돋보이는 그녀의 작품들은 해외에서도 상당한 인기를 끌었다는 후문이다. 김 작가는 “여러 곳에서의 초대를 통해 해외에도 몇 번 나가봤는데 아직까지 미술의 본고장이라고 할 수 있는 유럽을 가보지 못한 것이 아쉬움으로 남는다. 그래서 내년에는 유럽 쪽에서 전시를 진행해보고자 한다. 우리나라와는 또 다른 매력이 있을 것이라 기대하고 있다”라는 말로 앞으로의 계획을 밝혔다. 한계를 모르는 예술가, 김혜옥 작가의 미래는 더욱 찬란하게 빛날 예정이다.

The diary-like pictures awake a new sense

“I create art works with a sense of freedom than of intensity. This is because I imagine things freely in order not to draw the same things. The landscape, strong feeling and the images of nature and their beauty which I might have seen somewhere were combined together and came as forms and colors. A music flows over a cup of coffee and I enjoy the journey to finish my work through repetition of raking out and re-drawing.” – Artist’s note – 

Kim’s works awake a new sense
We can feel a different charm of western painting in Kim’s works. Various materials are formed in various compositions and this makes the viewers to approach in various ways over just one subject. An art critic Kim Sun-tae explains Kim’s works with the Austrian secessionists in terms of the formative side and also connects them to a tendency of Art Nouveau in terms of plane structure, decorativeness and esthetic and compositional elements. Having created this unique art world, Kim now is dreaming of yet another fly. 

Kim was born in Gwangwon Province and loved drawings since she was a child. She majored in design at university but led a life that had nothing to do with it after marriage as the circumstances were not favorable to her. The yearning for drawing, however, has lived throughout her life and she decided to resume the passion in her relatively late age. She worked hard under the instruction and a help of her professors and teachers to learn various styles and eventually succeeded in creating her unique style with western painting as the foundation.

From various objects to completing decorative style
Kim’s works are rather three dimensional than flat and decorative than gatherings of simple objects. In her main subject ‘flowers’, for example, Kim draws in flowers and stems against the background and two or more colors are mingled to create a unique sense of space. She also uses various objects such as porcelain, crushed rock and glass dust to give three dimensional effects. 

“The foundation of my works is the soil and nature” says Kim. Her love of nature is special and the soil symbolizes the energy that comes from nature. And she pours these elements into canvas. She keeps her sentiment felt when seeing the mountains and seas or walking the forests. The sentiment then becomes the main subject of a work and naturally a variety of colors come out from her brush through the indented images. “I like the clouds in the sky very much. I hung my red cloud work at a recent art fair and I’m planning to create works themed on clouds.” Like she has gone through many stories to tell her own story, she is working on various styles to show her other self.

I saw a large picture (162 x 130cm) when I stepped into her studio. A number of objects in the picture seem to talk each other in their own positions in different colors which are well organized. It looks as if it implies ‘3 months of diary’, the length of time it took to be completed. Kim’s works embrace a variety of stories and she says “I hope that viewers enjoy as it is seen rather than try to dig out a meaning of the picture.” 

Meanwhile, Kim takes initiative in supporting local artists as a member of the Goyang Branch of the Korean Fine Arts Association. “More than 600 members are registered as members of the Goyang branch but only 1/3 of them are active because they have to do other works than art in order to earn bread and butter. Providing studios and residency should be a good idea of support.”

Holding an exhibition in Europe
Kim showed her unique art world at the Goyang International Art Fair held from 15 to 21 September this year. Her unique ‘diary’ style attracted a great attention from many visitors and Kim made her reputation firmer. 

“I found that my large sized works sometimes made me tired and also the appreciators difficult to approach. So I’m recently working on smaller works like interior props and receiving a positive response. They especially love my porcelain-inspired works that can be used both as an art work and an interior prop.

Kim has held eight solo exhibitions and a number of group and invitational exhibitions in China and the US (LA and New York) where visitors also paid attention to her works. “It is regretful that I haven’t hung my works in Europe, the home of fine arts. So I’m planning an exhibition in the region next year for a different experience and charm.” The artist who does not know about limitation, Kim is expecting a brighter future as an artist.
