중국 의학에 보면 ‘미병(未病)’이라는 단어가 있다. 병은 아니지만 건강하지는 않는다는 뜻이다. 검진과 단기 종합 정밀 건강진단의 검사에서 이상한 수치는 나오지 않지만 그 다음해가 되면 나올지도 모르는, 병이 은밀하게 진행되고 있는 상태를 말한다. 때문에 동양의학에서는 이 미병을 치유하는 것을 중요하게 여기고 있다. 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 은밀하게 진행되는 성인병은 병이 발생하지 않는 미병인 동안 조치를 취하는 것이 중요하다. 그 중 생약이라고 불리는 것은 상약(上薬), 중약(中薬), 하약(下薬)으로 나뉜다. 이 세 가지 가운데 울금은 상약에 속해 이러한 미병을 치유하기에 적합한 약인 것으로 알려져 있다. 뿐만 아니라 울금은 카레 재료로 잘 알려져 있는 식물로 한약재, 향신료, 식용 등으로 이용되고 있다. 특히 지리산송이울금영농조합법인에서 생산되고 있는 울금은 ‘먹는 산소’로 알려져 있는 게르마늄을 첨가해 일반 울금과 차별화시켜 소비자에게 공급하고 있다. “울금은 진통, 건위, 이담 효능과 월경통, 황달, 외상 등의 치료에 사용되어 왔습니다. 울금의 대표적인 성분인 커큐민은 간장의 활동을 강화하고 담액분비 촉진, 이뇨작용이 있어 콜레스테롤을 용해하는 만큼 고혈압과 동맥경화에 효과적이고 타메론, 커큐올, 아즈렌 등의 성분은 살균, 항염, 항균 작용과 항종양 및 위 십이지장궤양 치료에 효과가 있을 뿐 아니라 피부건강유지와 미백효과에도 탁월한 효과가 있는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.” 또 울금은 어혈을 푸는데 탁월한 효과를 가지고 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 한방에서는 울금이 파혈거어(破血祛瘀)의 작용이 매우 강하다고 되어 있다. 동양의학에서는 혈의 순환에 이상이 생겨 정체된 상태를 어혈이라고 하는데 문제가 되는 성인병의 대부분이 한방에서 어혈이라고 부르는 혈액의 정체상태와 깊은 관계가 있다는 것이다.

친환경 재배방법으로 GPA 인증 획득
귀농 7년 차인 하 대표는 몸이 좋지 않아 요양을 목적으로 지인이 있는 지리산에서 생활을 하던 중 우연히 울금에 대해 알게 되었다고 한다. “처음 지리산에 내려와 미래에 대한 고민을 하고 있었습니다. 그러다 친구가 울금을 재배해 보면 어떻겠냐는 제안과 함께 울금에 대한 많은 정보와 자료를 챙겨 주었습니다. 그래서 울금 재배에 대해 고민하던 중 일본에 있던 후배에게서 일본은 숙취음료로 울금을 가장 선호한다는 말을 듣고 울금 재배를 결심하게 되었습니다.” 이렇게 그는 울금을 재배해야겠다는 마음을 먹고 지난 2012년 지리산송이울금영농조합법인을 설립, 1만평 규모의 땅을 임대해 본격적으로 재배하기 시작했다. 현재 지리산송이울금영농조합법인에서 생산되고 있는 상품은 자연산 송이를 비롯해 울금분말, 울금환, 발효울금, 통건조울금, 생울금 등이다. 울금 농사를 시작한지 7년밖에 되지 않지만 청정지역 산청에서 무농약 친환경 농법으로 재배하면서 GAP 인증까지 받았고, TV 홈쇼핑과 소셜커머스 등 활발한 온라인 판매와 산청약초시장의 매장에서의 직거래 판매 등을 통해 소비자들로부터 인정을 받고 있다. 이와 더불어 소비자들을 직접 재배현장으로 견학 오게 하여 청정한 지리산골에서 깨끗하고 안전한 울금을 생산하고 있는 모습을 눈으로 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공함으로써 신뢰감도 형성되었다고 한다.

According to Chinese medicine, there is a word ‘Mibyeong’ meaning neither being healthy nor diseased. It refers, though not the coming of a strange figure out from medical checkup or short-term general close examination, to the condition of possible yes next year, that is, the condition of surreptitious progress of a disease. This is why oriental medicine attaches importance to healing this Mibyeong. Then, my friend proposed to me the cultivation of Wulgeum presenting lots of information and materials about Wulgeum. While thinking hard about growing Wulgeum, I heard from one of my juniors staying in japan that that country prefers Wulgeum most of all beverages for hangover, which resolved me to grow Wulgeum.” With such determination, he founded Mt. Jiri Songiwulgeum Farming Corporation in 2012 and rented land in the size of 10,000 Pyeong to start growing Wulgeun in earnest. Currently, products produced in Mt. Jiri Songiwulgeum Farming Corporation include natural clusters, Wulgeum powder, Wulgeum bolus, fermented Wulgeum, bin- dried Wulgeum, natural Wulgeum, etc. it was only seven years since he began to grow Wulgeum but while growing them in a chemical-free, eco-friendly farming in the clean area of Sanchung, he obtained GAP certification and is receiving recognition from consumers through active online sales, such as TV home shopping and Social Commerce, and direct transaction at the shop of Sanchung herb market. Besides, he was able to build confidence by inviting consumers directly to the scene of cultivation on a field trip and providing them with an opportunity to see the picture of producing clean and safe Wulgeum in a clean area of Mt.
