산청은 예로부터 수려한 산과 맑은 물, 정감이 있는 사람이 함께 어울려 사는 3(三)청의 고장으로써 민족의 영산 지리산 품속에서 자라는 최대 규모의 명품약초를 생산하고 있다. 유네스코 등재 세계기록유산 ‘동의보감’ 발간 400주년을 맞아 세계 최초의 건강엑스포인 ‘2013 산청세계전통의약엑스포’를 개최한 이후 산청은 한방과 약초의 본고장답게 매년 산청한방약초축제가 개최되고 있다. 특히 소설 동의보감에서 허준이 유의태의 제자가 되는 곳인 산청을 배경으로 한 부분이 초반에 많이 등장하며 인지도를 올린 산청은 산청한방테마파크 개설 및 한방약초축제, 동의보감 발간 400주년을 기념하여 세계전통의학엑스포를 개최하는 등 한방과 약초 명산지로서의 이미지를 한껏 드높이고 있다. 이에 허준 선생의 정기를 받으며 최대한 전통방식에 가깝게 환자를 돌보며 몸의 병뿐만 아니라 마음의 병까지 치료를 하는 곳이 있어 화제가 되고 있다. 산청 동의보감 한의원의 김종권 원장이 바로 그 주인공이다.
학창시절, 출가를 결심하다!
어린 시절, 대구 시내에서 식당을 했던 부모님으로 인해 할아버지와 할머니 밑에서 자란 그는 약초와 한자에 해박한 지식이 있었던 할아버지의 영향으로 한자와 약초에 대해 자연스럽게 익혔다. 특히 할아버지는 아침에 일어나면 가부좌를 틀고 앉아서 뭔가를 외우고 몸이 아프면 민간요법으로 몸을 낫게 해 주었다. 김 원장은 이런 할아버지를 닮고 싶었기에 불교라는 종교를 동경하게 되었고 대학진학 무렵에는 스님이 되기 위해 출가를 결심하게 되었다고 한다. “대학을 졸업하고 출가해서 불경을 보려면 한자를 많이 알아야 한다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 한의대에 가면 자연스레 한자를 많이 접할 수 있고 중간에 학교를 그만두더라도 출가하기 편할 것이라고 생각했습니다.” 경희대 한의대 시절 그는 스님이 되기 위해 출가하기로 결심을 하고 부모님께 얘기했다. 평소 김 원장의 성격을 잘 알기에 부모님은 팔공산의 스님에게 데리고 가 면담을 시켰다. 스님은 출가를 하더라도 군대를 가야 하니 군대에 가서 좀 더 생각을 해보라고 권했다고 한다. 이에 김 원장은 휴학을 하고 바로 군 입대를 하게 되었다. 하지만 군 생활을 반 정도 했을 때 고관절에 통증이 심해져서 정밀검사를 하게 되었고 고관절 괴사라는 진단을 받고 의병 제대를 하게 되었다. 뿐만 아니라 대한불교 조계종에서는 가부좌가 안 되는 경우 출가를 할 수 없다고 규정되어 있어 김 원장은 출가를 포기하고 한의학에 집중하게 되었다고 한다.
서울대학교 병원을 누르고 외국인 환자 유치 실적 전국 5위 달성
2004년 서울 압구정에 피부 전문 한의원을 개원한 김 원장은 유명 연예인들도 많이 찾을 정도로 병원이 잘 되자 2009년 명동으로 확장 이전했다. 명동은 외국인들이 많이 오는 곳이어서 외국인들에게 우리 전통 한의학을 알리기 위해서였다. 외국인 유치를 위해 일요일마다 인천공항 입국장에 가서 현지 가이드를 대상으로 한의원 홍보물을 직접 돌렸다. 이렇게 6개월 동안 하루도 거르지 않고 발품을 팔자 가이드들 사이에 소문이 나기 시작했고 외국인 관광객들도 한의원을 찾기 시작했다. “한의원을 찾는 외국인 손님들 중 일본인 환자가 대부분이었습니다. 당시 환율이 100엔에 1,500원 정도였고 일본인들도 한의학의 효과가 좋다고 생각했었죠. 무엇보다 일본 사람들은 한의사의 처방과 일상에서의 운동 등 주의사항을 잘 따라 주었습니다.” 김 원장의 한의원은 일본까지 소문이 나면서 많은 일본인들이 김 원장의 처방을 받기 위해 한국으로 와 연간 3,000명이 넘는 환자가 진료를 보러 왔다고 한다. 이로 인해 김 원장은 보건복지부가 공식적으로 발표한 ‘2012 외국인 환자 유치 실적’에서 서울대학교 병원을 누르고 전국 5위를 달성하는 쾌거를 이뤘다. 이후 한의원을 대대적으로 확장했지만 엔화 급락과 한일관계의 냉각으로 인해 일본 환자의 방문 수가 반 토막이 나고 설상가상으로 부친의 폐암 확진 후 갑작스러운 별세(別世)로 심신이 지친 그는 한의원을 정리하게 되었다. 그러던 중 지난 2015년 8월 지인의 소개로 산청을 방문하게 된 그는 산청의 매력에 한눈에 반해 10월부터 내려와 진료를 하기 시작했다. 산청으로 온 그는 마치 속세에서 벗어나 출가를 한 것처럼 기뻤다고 한다. 하지만 산청군의 시설을 위탁받은 모 조합의 비리 의혹을 언론 인터뷰에서 언급하였다가 조합으로부터 명예훼손 소송을 당하고 기존 한의원 자리에서도 나가라는 통보를 받았다. 이로 인해 김 원장은 조합 측과 몇 번의 법정공방이 있었지만 결국 명예훼손 무혐의를 받고 한의원은 확장 이전하면서 사건은 일단락되었다. “서울에서 여러 가지의 이유로 인해 심신이 너무 지쳐 산청으로 왔는데 여기서도 재판까지 가는 일이 생겨 너무 힘들었습니다. 지금 생각해보면 저를 괴롭혔던 모 조합의 이사장이 역행보살이 아니었나 생각됩니다. 그분은 제가 개인적인 이익을 위해 거짓말을 했다고 명예훼손으로 저를 고소했지만, 검찰 조사에서 증거 자료를 제출했더니 모두 혐의 없음으로 최종 결론이 나서 이제는 누구의 말이 진실인지 공식적으로 밝혀졌습니다. 한의원은 더 넓고 임대료도 기존보다 더욱 저렴하면서 근처의 목 좋은 곳으로 이전하게 되었으니 부처님의 가피이고 역행보살에게 감사드릴 일입니다. 처음에는 억울한 마음에 무고로 맞고소를 할까 생각했지만 지금은 다 내려놓고 환자분께만 집중하기로 했습니다.”
의술은 인술, 사람에 따른 의술을 펼치다.
지난 6월, 산청군과 지인의 도움으로 기존에 있던 위치 근처에 확장 이전한 동의보감 한의원의 김종권 원장. “동의보감 한의원은 전통 한의원을 재현하고 있습니다. 산청은 허준 선생이 의술을 펼치던 곳이며 성철 스님이 나신 곳입니다. 허준 선생의 ‘동의보감’을 보면 수많은 처방이 나오지만 그 어떤 처방보다 ‘섭생(攝生)’, 즉 일상생활을 규칙적으로 해 몸을 튼튼하게 하고 병이 생기지 않게 하는 것을 매우 중요하게 여기셨습니다. 모든 병의 근원은 바로 평상시의 생활 습관에서 비롯됩니다. 때문에 평상시의 생활 습관이 매우 중요합니다. 이에 동의보감 한의원에서는 섭생을 중심으로 몸의 병과 마음의 병을 치료하고 있습니다.” 뿐만 아니라 이곳에서는 배꼽왕뜸과 장수베개, 황실의 보약이라 불리는 공진단 만들기, 십전대보탕 약첩 싸기, 한약 복주머니 만들기, 한방 치약 만들기 등 다양한 한방 체험프로그램을 통해 환자들의 몸과 마음을 낫게 하고 있다. 특히 최대한 전통한방을 재현하고자 김 원장은 베드 대신 온돌방에서 환자들을 치료하고 있으며 환자들 한 명 한 명마다 부항과 추나 요법으로 뭉친 근육을 풀어주는 등 손등에 박힌 굳은살 정도는 아랑곳하지 않고 진심으로 환자들을 위한 인술을 펼치고 있다. “한의학은 질병치료에 있어 단지 국소적으로 느끼는 통증이나 장애의 개선만을 목적으로 하지 않고 문제가 발생하게 된 제반문제를 유기적으로 살펴 근본을 치료하는 것이 가장 중요합니다. 즉 환자의 증상에만 매달리지 않고 근원을 치료한다는 것입니다. 예를 들어 무거운 물건을 들다 허리가 아픈 경우나 나쁜 자세로 무거운 물건을 들다가 허리가 삐끗한 경우에는 국소적 통증만 치료할 수도 있습니다. 하지만 근본적으로 신장의 운이 약하거나, 차가운 기운이 올라가고 따뜻한 기운은 내려가는 승화강(水升火降)이 안돼서 하체가 부실하여 허리통증이 유발되는 경우가 의외로 많습니다. 따라서 허리통증 자체를 치료하는 것은 표치(表治)’이며 신장의 기운을 보해주거나, 수승화강이 제대로 운행하도록 하여 몸의 균형을 잡아주는 것은 ‘본치(本治)’에 해당합니다. 이처럼 한의학은 표치보다 본치를 하는 전통의학입니다.” 이처럼 한의학은 몸의 증상을 치료하는 것이 아니라 병의 뿌리를 찾아가는 학문이다. 눈에 보이는 증상이 아니라 그 근원의 뿌리를 다스리며 천연약재를 바탕으로 하기에 부작용이 거의 없다. 또한 한약은 개의 약물을 일정한 규율에 따라 배합한 것으로 5,000년 이상의 임상경험이 축적된 경험의학의 산물이다. 한약은 화학적인 약이 아니라 자연에서 얻을 수 있는 약재들을 바탕으로 처방하기 때문에 한의학은 현대의학으로 치료할 수 없는 난치병들을 치료할 수 있는 대체의학으로 주목받고 있으며 특히 건강에 대한 대중들의 관심에 힘입어 그 중요성이 더욱 커지고 있는 가운데 김 원장은 의술뿐만 아니라 인술로써 환자를 대하고 있다 보니 최근에는 외국인 관광객도 점점 늘고 있는 추세라고 한다. 외국인 관광객 중에서도 중국인들이 동의보감 한의원을 많이 방문하고 있는데 중의학이 한의학의 원류이지만 중의학 못지않게 한의학이 뛰어나다며 극찬을 할 정도라고 한다.
예로부터 한약은 짓는 정성, 달이는 정성, 먹는 정성의 세 가지 정성이 있어야 한다고 했다. 환자들 개개인에 맞는 정확한 처방과 좋은 약재로 세심하게 약을 달이는 정성, 그리고 환자들의 믿음이 있는 동의보감 한의원. “앞으로는 수도권 지역 등 멀리서 오는 환자들을 위해 인근의 숙박시설과 연계해 지리산이 품고 있는 산청에서 몸뿐만 아니라 마음의 치료까지 할 수 있는 한방관광투어를 계획하고 있습니다. 한방과 약초의 본고장답게 산청이 전국의 많은 사람들에게 알려지고 한방과 약초를 이용해 병든 사람들의 몸과 마음을 만져줄 수 있는 곳으로 자리매김 하기 위해 최선을 다할 것입니다”라는 김종권 원장의 바람처럼 동의보감 한의원을 통해 많은 사람들이 몸과 마음을 치료받아 잃어버렸던 건강을 되찾을 수 있기를 바라며 그의 행보를 주목해본다.
Decides to leave home in his school days!
Because of his parents running a restaurant in Daegu city, he grew up under grandparents in childhood and learned about Chinese characters and herbs spontaneously by the influence of his grandfather who had extensive knowledge on them. Especially, his grandfather would recite something sitting in a lotus position on getting up in the morning and cure him with folk remedies when he was ill. Wanting to resemble his grandfather, president Kim came to yearn after the religion of Buddhism and decided to leave home to become a priest when he had to enter a university. “ thought I needed to learn many Chinese characters to read Buddhist scriptures when I left home after graduating from university. So I applied to an oriental medicine school because it would give me a natural opportunity to contact Chinese characters and it would be easy to leave home if I dropped school halfway.”While attending the oriental medicine school of Kyunghee University, he decided to enter the priesthood and told his plan to his parents. Knowing well the personality of president Kim, his parents took him to the priest of Mt. Palgong for
interview. The priest then advised him to think twice in the army because he must join the army even if entering the priesthood. So president Kim took a leave of absence and immediately joined the army. However, when he finished about half the expected military service, pain in the hip joint became serious and diagnosis on a close examination with its necrosis got him a medical discharge. Besides, because priesthood was not allowed for case of failing to sit in a lotus position by the clause of Korean Buddhist Chogye Order, he gave up leaving home and concentrated himself on oriental medicine.
Achieved the fifth place in the nation in the achievement of attracting foreign patients beating SNU Hospital
President Kim opened skin Korean Medicine Clinic at Apgujung, Seoul, in 2004 but as the clinic prospered enough for celebrities to visit, he expanded and relocated it to Myeong-dong in 2009.
He wanted to promote our traditional medicine to foreigners at Myung-dong which was frequented by many of them. To attract foreign people, he went to the arrivals hall of Incheon International Airport every Sunday and distributed leaflets for the Korean Medicine Clinic in person to local tour guides. After such hard work for six months without missing one day, his clinic began to be talked about among tour guides and foreign tourists also started to visit his Korean Medicine Clinic. As president Kim’ Korean Medicine Clinic became on the grapevine even to Japan, many Japanese came to Korea to be treated by him and he says that over 3,000 patients annually visited him for treatment.
This enabled president Kim to win the fifth place in the nation in attracting foreign patients beating Seoul National University Hospital, according to official release by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Then, even though he expanded the clinic on a large scale, he lost half of the Japanese patients due to Yen’ sudden fall and the frozen Korea-Japan relationship and, to make matters worse, his father’ sudden decease after definitive diagnosis with lung cancer tired him out in body and
mind leading to disposal of the Korean Medicine Clinic. But in August 2015, he came to visit Sancheong by an acquaintance’ suggestion, and falling for it by its fascination, he came down and began to treat patients from October.
Medicine is benevolent art, enabling him to extend medicine by person
Last June, president Kim Jong-kwon expanded and relocated Dongui-bogam Korean Medicine Clinic by the help of Sancheong-gun and his acquaintances.
He said, “ongui-bogam Korean Medicine Clinic is reproducing the traditional Korean Medicine Clinic. Sancheong is the place where Huh Jun carried out medicine and priest Seongchul was born. In Doctor Huh jun’ Dongui-bogam appear numerous prescriptions but he regarded care of health more important than any prescriptions, that is, making the body strong and not allowing disease to occur by leading an orderly life. The origin of all disease is from the usual lifestyle. As lifestyle is so
important, Dongui-bogam Korean Medicine Clinic is treating physical and spiritual disease with a focus on the care of health.”
Besides, the place is curing patients of body and mind through diverse oriental experience programs such as naval moxa, longevity pillow, making Gongjindan called a royal tonic, wrapping a dose of medicine for Shipjeondaebotang, making good-luck pocket of oriental medicine, herb tooth-paste, etc. Especially, to reproduce the traditional herb medicine as far as possible, president Kim is treating patients in an Ondol room instead of the bed, loosening the stiff muscle for each
patient with cupping and Chuna manipulation, He is truly carrying out benevolent art for patients even without considering the callus on the back of his hand. Oriental medicine is the science of tracing the root of disease rather than treating the symptom of body. It has almost no side effects because it controls not visible symptom but the root of the origin with the base of natural medicines. Besides, herb medicine is a combination of each medicine pursuant to certain rules and the product of experiential medicine with accumulation of over five thousand years’
clinical experiences. For this reason, herb medicine is not a chemical medicine but prescribed based on medicines obtainable in nature, so it is being highlighted as alternative medicine that can cure incurable diseases defied by modern medicine
and its importance is becoming even larger helped by the increased concerns with health. Treating patients with benevolent art as well as medicine, president Kim says that more and more foreign tourists are visiting his clinic. Of them, Chinese people are visiting Dongui-bogam Korean Medicine Clinic in large numbers and they speak very highly of Korean medicine, saying that though coming from Chinese medicine, Korean medicine is no less excellent than Chinese medicine.
“In the future, I am planning on herbal medicine tour that can cure the mind as well as the body in Sancheong embraced by Mt. Jiri for patients coming from a long distance including metropolitan areas by connecting nearby accommodations. I will do my best to make Sancheong known to many people around the country as the home of herbal medicine and herbs and to put the clinic in place as curing the body and the mind of those diseased using herbal medicine and herbs.”As the hope of president Kim Jong-won, it is highly expected that many people will recover their lost health through Dongui-bogam Clinic by getting cured of their mind and body.
