카이로프랙틱(chiropractic)으로 환자들의 아픔 어루만지는 명품 치료사

손을 뜻하는 ‘카이로(cheir)’와 치료를 뜻하는 ‘프랙틱스(praxis)’의 합성어인 카이로프랙틱(chiropractic)은 약물이나 수술을 사용하지 않고 신경 및 근골격계를 복합적으로 다루는 치료를 뜻한다. 캐나다인 D.D 팔머가 이를 창안한 이래 여러 선진국들에서는 카이로프랙틱의 효과를 입증 받고 정식 대학 학과가 개설되는 등의 다양한 지원을 받고 있다. 그러나 우리나라의 카이로프랙틱 수료자들은 여전히 정부의 인정을 받지 못한 상황 속에서 매우 큰 어려움을 겪고 있다. 이번 호 <월간파워코리아>에서는 바른자세재활운동센터 김영길 원장을 만나 카이로프랙틱의 중요성과 인가 필요성 등에 대한 이야기를 들어보았다.

척추 및 근골격계 바로잡는 카이로프랙틱, 정식 의료 과목으로 인정받아야

강원도 춘천시의 바른자세재활운동센터는 척추 및 디스크, 근골격계 질환에 대한 수기적 치료를 진행하는 곳이다. 오랜 세월 치료에만 집중한 결과 현대인들의 대표적인 만성 질환으로 손꼽히는 척추측만증, 퇴행성 척추 장애, 디스크, 거북목 증후군 등 다양한 질환을 가진 환자들이 입소문을 통해 센터를 방문하고 있다. 김영길 원장은 미국 ICA 국제카이로프랙틱협회(TOR)에서 카이로프랙터로 인증 받고 현재 센터를 운영하고 있다. 그러나 현재 수십 년에 걸친 계류 과정 속에서 여전히 카이로프랙틱이 정식 의료 과목으로 인정받지 못하고 있는 안타까운 현실이 그의 앞길에 놓여 있는 상황이다.
김 원장은 “가까운 일본만 하더라도 카이로프랙틱 전문 단과대학이 2개 설립되었고, 지압대학과 균형대학 단과반 등도 있다. 카이로프랙틱을 의료기술의 하나로서 충분히 인정하고 있는 것이다. 그러나 우리나라는 이미 지난 2014년에도 보건복지부에서 카이로프랙틱을 의료기술로 인정하자는 움직임이 있었지만 의사들이 이를 반대하고 나섰다. 우리 몸의 아픈 것을 치료하는 기술인데 이를 의료기술로 인정하지 못한다는 것은 말이 안 된다. 소비자들로서도 스스로의 권리를 찾고자 노력하는 것이 당연하다고 생각한다”라고 강조했다.
김 원장은 삼육보건대에 진학하여 카이로프랙틱에 입문하게 된 이력이 있다. 그 이후 ICA 국제카이로프랙틱협회(TOR)에서 인증받고, 웨스턴 캘리포니아 의과대학에서 한방영양학 박사학위를 취득, 일본 프리저베이션 자세보건균정대학 학사를 취득하기도 했다. 현재 춘천 지역에서 다양한 이유로 몸의 균형이 무너진 환자들을 치료하며 매년 소문을 듣고 찾아온 4~50명의 외국인 환자들을 돌보기도 한다는 김 원장은, 지역사회 안에서 나눔을 실천하며 함께 환자들을 치료하고 있다.

자세 교정과 신경 다스리는 치료로 환자들의 아픔 어루만져

김 원장은 카이로프랙틱을 통해 ‘센터를 방문하는 환자들을 완치시킨다’는 것을 철칙으로 하는 꼼꼼한 치료를 진행한다. 몇 차례에 걸친 상담과 문진을 통해 신경을 다스릴 수 있게 해주며, 수술이나 약을 사용하지 않고도 수기치료를 통해 몸의 건강을 되찾을 수 있어 그에 대한 환자들의 호응 역시 높다. 김 원장은 “각종 질병으로 병원 신세를 지고 있는 분들 중 60%는 자세 불량에 의해 질병을 얻게 되는 경우라고 볼 수 있다. 그렇기 때문에 수기치료를 통해 바른 자세를 잡아주고 바른 생활습관을 들이게 한다면 치료가 더욱 쉬워진다”라고 이야기했다.
또한 김 원장은 명지대 가족복지학과에서 심리학을 공부하고 보건복지부와 여성가족부가 인정한 심리, 교육 분야 상담사로 활동 중이다. 이로 인해 센터에서 환자들을 진단할 때도 상담 기술을 적극적으로 활용하는 편이라고 한다. 그는 현재 청소년, 노인, 약물, 마약 관련 예방상담 전문 강사로서 17년째 무료상담을 진행하며, 2006년 MBN 추적르포, 2012년 SBS 강원민방 생방송 투데이, 2014년 MBC 생방송 오늘아침 신(新) 가족기획 등 다수의 TV 프로그램에 출연하기도 한 유명인사다. 이처럼 다양한 방식으로 사회에 대한 나눔을 실천하는 것 역시 대한민국의 올바른 가치관을 세워가기 위한 김 원장의 목표와 큰 관련이 있다. 김 원장은 앞으로 카이로프랙틱이 대중화되고 의료법의 지원을 받는 정식 종목으로 바로 서게 될 날을 기다리고 있다. 특히 카이로프랙틱 센터를 운영하는 데 있어 수기치료 종목에 보험이 적용되지 않는다는 사실은 이 분야의 발전을 가로막는 중요한 요인으로 작용하고 있다. 김 원장은 “카이로프랙틱과 완전히 같은 것은 아니지만 체형관리, 재활트레이너, 자세교정운동지도자 등의 자격증이 분명히 존재하고 있다. 이는 국민들이 이러한 과정을 필요로 한다는 뜻이다. 앞으로도 지역 내에서 꾸준히 치료 활동을 하면서 더욱 많은 사람들이 카이로프랙틱을 만날 수 있도록 정진하고자 한다”라는 포부를 밝혔다. 여전히 제자리걸음을 걷고 있는 현대 의학 속에서도 조용하지만 꾸준히 자신만의 길을 걸으며, 사회에 대한 실천을 이어가는 김 원장의 행보는 오늘날 우리 사회의 귀감이 되고 있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다.

“Chiropractic must be recognized as an official medical treatment”

The Good-Posture Exercise Center in Chuncheon City is famous for providing non-surgery cures to musculoskeletal disease such as discs with chiropractic. Patients who visit to the center are suffering from scoliosis, anaplastia spinal lesion, discs and turtle neck. Director Kim Young-gil trained at the International Chiropractic Association in the US and came back to Korea to open the center. He feels regretful, however, to have witnessed the fact that chiropractic being recognized as an official medical treatment has been pending for tens of years in Korea and it still is. 

“Two universities in Japan, for example, run college of chiropractic and there also are colleges of acupressure and of balance. It means that the government recognizes chiropractic as an official medical practice. It was 2014 that there was a move in Korea to recognize it like Japan but it had to face strong opposition of the doctors. Chiropractic is no different from other medical practices considering the fact that it cures pains of patients so it must be recognized as a medical practice” asserts Kim. 

Kim studied chiropractic at Samyook Health University. He carried on the study at the International Chiropractic Association in the US and obtained a certificate. He also obtained a PhD in oriental nutritional science at Western University of Health Sciences in the US as well as a degree at Preservation FMS College in Japan. 

It is notable that among many of his patients, 40 to 50 of them are foreigners who willingly make a journey to seek Kim’s professional advice and cures. 

Kim corrects the posture, controls the nerves and embraces the pain

Kim is giving his utmost effort to every single patient under his principle ‘Give patients a permanent relief!’ He goes through consulting and medical examination first and controls the nerves next and uses manipulation therapy to recover health of the body without using surgery or medicine. “60% of the patients have gained diseases by bad posture. It means that it is more effective and easy to cure the diseases by correcting the bad posture and promoting healthy life style.”

Apart from being a chiropractor, he has worked as a specialist lecturer on youth, elderly people and drugs for 17 years and appeared on numerous TV programs including MBN <Trace Reportage> in 2006, SBS Gwangwon <Live Today> in 2012 and MBC <Live This Morning> in 2014. 

It is Kim’s most ardent wish that chiropractic is recognized as an official medical practice in near future. It is notable that manipulation therapy at the center is not categorized for insurance. The problem is that it plays the main agent to play obstacle against the development of the field. 

“There are certificates relating to body shape management, rehabilitation training and instruction for body correction. It means that there are demands of the people for these fields. So I will keep carrying on my passion in chiropractic so that more people can benefit from it” 

Modern medicine today somewhat seems to standstill but new medical practice like chiropractic might blow a fresh breeze to the industry in near future thanks to a person like Kim and his continuous passion and effort in the field.
